On October 5, the University of Chicago held its third annual South Side Science Festival, drawing more than 4,500 attendees from across the community. Organized by UChicago’s Biological Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Division, Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, and Office of Civic Engagement, the festival offered hands-on science experiences for all ages.
Participants enjoyed activities like controlling robots, learning CPR, and watching explosive liquid nitrogen demonstrations. Nearly 1,000 UChicago volunteers helped run the event, strengthening the university’s connection with the South Side and promoting STEM education. Families, like the Carsons from Bronzeville, praised the opportunity for kids to explore science in an accessible and fun environment. The festival is part of UChicago’s broader mission to inspire diverse participation in STEM fields.
