This year the Biological Sciences Diversity Committee (BDC) would like to sponsor three BSD graduate students to attend the Bouchet Conference at Yale University on April 7 and 8. The Bouchet Conference highlights the research of under represented minorities of all academic disciplines. Registration closes March 1, 2022. Interested students should email chroman@bsd.uchicago.edu. The annual seminar is named in honor of Edward Bouchet (1852-1918), who graduated from Yale College in 1874. He went on to be the first African American to earn a doctorate from an American university when he earned a Ph.D. in physics at Yale University in 1876. At that time, Bouchet was the sixth person in the western hemisphere to earn a doctorate in physics. He was also one of the first African Americans to be elected to the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
