We are very proud of the accomplishments of our graduate students.  BSD students have an excellent record of obtaining competitive fellowships, receiving national awards for their research, and publishing findings that move their fields forward.  The most recent student accomplishments are shown below.

Katie Rhodes

Katie Rhodes (Human Genetics) has received an honorable mention for the 2017 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). Her advisor is Yoav GIlad, PhD.

John Park

John Park (Committee on Evolutionary Biology) has received an honorable mention for the 2017 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP).

Olivia Gray

Olivia Gray (Human Genetics) has received an honorable mention for the 2017 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). Her advisor is Anna Di Rienzo, PhD.

Arjun Biddanda

Arjun Biddanda (Human Genetics) has received an honorable mention for the 2017 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). His advisor is John Novembre, PhD.

Erick Bayala

Erick Bayala (Integrative Biology) has received an honorable mention for the 2017 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP). His advisor is Marcus Kronforst, PhD.

Hussein Al-Asadi
Hussein Al-Asadi (Committee on Evolutionary Biology, advisors Matthew Stephens and John Novembre) is a semifinalist for the ASHG/Charles J. Epstein Trainee Awards for Excellence in Human Genetics Research. The semifinalist designation carries a $750 award.
Payal Tiwari

Fourth year Cancer Biology student Payal Tiwari was awarded a new and prestigious NIH National Cancer Institute F99/K00 Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award. This award was established to identify and encourage outstanding graduate students to commit to pursuing careers as independent cancer researchers. The NIH allows each university to nominate only one predoctoral candidate for this grant. Tiwari will receive two years of funding as a doctoral student, and when she secures a postdoctoral position in her chosen area of research, she will be eligible for up to four more years of generous support from the NCI for further training and career development. Tiwari is investigating the link between obesity and triple negative breast cancer. Her advisor is Dr. Marsha Rosner.

 Adrian Grzybowski

Congratulations to Adrian Grzybowski (Cell & Molecular Biology) on winning a 2016-2017 William Rainey Harper Dissertation Fellowship. Competition for the Harper Fellowship is University-wide, and only one student is chosen from the BSD. Adrian is part of Alex Ruthenburg's lab.

Monika Scholz

Congratulations to Monika Scholz for receiving the PSD Harper Dissertation Award designated for Biophysical Sciences. 

Ashley Sample

Congratulations to Ashley Sample (Cancer Biology) on her winning abstract at the 2016 Janet Rowley Research Day. She won in the Basic Science - Trainee category. Her advisor is Dr. Yu-Ying He.
