PhD Transfer Students to UChicago with Incoming Faculty

PhD students who plan to complete their research at the University of Chicago with their advisor (who has moved from another university or research institution) must meet the following requirements for this on-site research to be considered:

Advanced PhD Students (Year 3+ - after Qualifying Exam/Admission to Candidacy)

  • Students may not transfer if they are sufficiently advanced in their degree research such that those thesis requirements have been completed at their home institution (e.g. didactic coursework, comprehensive exam, qualifying exam/approval of the thesis proposal, divisional teaching and ethics requirements, etc.). This applies to students that are in their current third year and beyond in their degree studies.
  • Students may apply to be a Non-Degree Visiting Student (NDVS) at the University of Chicago. The students would remain enrolled at their primary institution, but the NDVS status would allow the students to continue their research with their advisor at UChicago. This type of NDVS status is exempt from the 8-quarter limitation, and funding for the student is provided by their advisor.

Beginning PhD Students (Year 1+ to rising 3rd)

  • Students in their current 1st year to raising 3rd year, are eligible to apply as a transfer student to the University of Chicago. Transfer applicants follow the same application procedures as a new applicant but are not subject to the divisional application deadline.
  • Transfer students are ineligible to receive the divisional one-time moving allowance.
  • Students must take no less than 3 courses in the degree program.
  • The transfer student is required to complete all degree program and divisional milestone requirements at UChicago (e.g. didactic coursework, qualifying exams/approval of the thesis proposal, divisional teaching and ethics requirements, etc.). Comprehensive exams successfully completed at another institution will be accepted.
  • Upon matriculation, the student’s previous years completed toward degree progress at the preceding institution will count toward the time to degree at UChicago and will be reflected as the same academic level at matriculation.
  • A completed Student Lab Selection form must be submitted to the Dean of Students Office for signature.
