Marcus Clark,(Cancer Biology, Immunology) a professor in the Department of Medicine, received the Faculty Award for Excellence in PhD Teaching and Mentoring. The University of Chicago annually honors exceptional faculty for outstanding teaching and mentoring, and Clark exemplified these qualities, earning recognition for his excellence this year.

As the chief of the Section of Rheumatology and director of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), an NIH-funded initiative combining medical degrees with PhDs, Clark embraces a hands-on approach to mentoring. Passionate about his work, he focuses on understanding each student's interests and strengths, ensuring they are personally guided rather than just administratively managed.

Clark mentors approximately 80 students in the MSTP, offering personalized advice and challenging them to define and reach their own potential. His philosophy of providing guidance without solutions fosters independence and empowerment in his students. Drawing from his own career in researching immune system functions and treating autoimmune diseases, Clark provides invaluable insights and support, aiming to see his students succeed and thrive.
