Admissions

Non-Degree Visiting Students

Non-degree visiting students (NDVS) are advanced graduate students pursuing a graduate level degree at another academic institution, who are at the research or writing stage, and who temporarily work on their research project with a faculty member at the University of Chicago.

The BSD accepts both domestic and international NDVS. NDVS should identify particular faculty with whom to work whose research closely aligns with their own interests. You may browse our faculty profiles by clicking through the programs page and the faculty page

International NDVS

Detailed information for prospective NDVS, including visa requirements, as well as information for current NDVS can be found on the Office of International Affairs Non-Degree Visiting Students page. Below are the costs for the 2024-25 academic year.

Tuition: $1,492 per quarter

Graduate student services fee: $425 for Summer Quarter; $484 per quarter for Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters

Insurance: $1,666 per quarter (may be waived with proof of comparable coverage)

Cost of living: $11,250 per quarter

Enrolling in a program of study includes additional costs beyond the tuition listed here. For a full list of direct and indirect expenses associated with the cost of attendance, please visit the Cost of Attendance page of the Graduate Financial Aid Office website.

To be eligible for F1 and J1 visas, applicants must complete an English proficiency assessment, in accordance with U.S. State Department policies [22 CFR 62.10(a)(2)].

You may find information about UChicago faculty with whom you may want to work here.
